During the war my father was in charge of Grantham railway station...During the Blitz Winston Churchill had a special train which used to come to Grantham and stay in the sidings.. At handover the staff used to tell each other that the old man was here. One night the attendant from the train came to my Dad and said he had to deliver a package to 10 Downing Street. Dad contacted the Police, they put the attendant and a policeman on a train to London in a locked compartment. They were met by offices from Scotland Yard who took them to deliver the package, gave them a meal and returned them to Grantham.

The railway station was always packed with people travelling and the forces. One day the bombs hit Kings Cross Station in London, the trains were backed upto York. It was then decided to transfer them to Liverpool Street Station which at that time was private.

One night I had been out fire watching when I returned home to hear a terrific big bang, 13 bombs had been dropped everywhere was alight including our garden, we were very lucky that night. The bombers came over nearly every night on their way to Coventry and Nottingham. Local alarms were introduced which were like pips, so we knew when they were actually at Grantham.
