I was 20 years old when I joined up. I was employed as a shunter on a private railway sidings before the war.

I was trained as a second pilot and a bomber aimer in the nose of the plane. I also towed gliders and dropped supplies.

I took troops to Stavanger, Norway. The young men used to ask me what to take to impress the girls over there — perfumed soap, coffee perhaps. One bloke took tinned sardines — to Norway! After the war he came to work for the same company as me and he never lived it down.
