My main story is being a shelter monitor at the above school. Being a shelter monitor was because the shelter was below the school playground meant that you went down a light of stairs to this lower level. It was in a square layout with ventilation covers at each corner. These covers were level with the playgorund closed before assembly, playbreaks and after school. In between during lessons my job was to open them to allow ventilation. If an air raid siren went I had to dash out of lessons and close them and then all the pupils and teachers would dash down into the shelter. My other job was to repair any benches that were broken in woodwork class. We used to have a select chosen group who would during playbreaks play in the shelter. Our favourite game was to make obstcles with the benches and dash around the square. During this one of us would switch the lights out!! You can imagine the confusion and the broken benches. All good fun.
