The thing that sticks out in my mind, Newark was an industrial town. Newark being at the side of the London to Edinburgh Railway line in a valley must have been hard to distinguish. A German pilot who approached by daylight, who used to work at a factory in Newark knew where it was. I can remember watching this bomber coming in at low level. I was the proud owner of a 'Diana' air-rifle. I was shooting at this plane from my bedroom window as I watched him unload his bombs. My mother was with a neighbour from next door who was very deaf and she called up "what's all that racket?", "I'm shooting at the German's" says I. What was that says the deaf neighbour, he's shooting at the Germans relayed my mother. At that the whole house shook as bombs were dropped !
