Part 12
When I was in the fire service on a Sunday night there was a club in Birmingham for the forces personnel it was called the Queensbury Club and you could go there and get in free providing you were in uniform, and you could dance to one of the top bands and musicians. It would start about six o鈥檆lock on a Sunday evening and go on until 12 o鈥檆lock, or if there was an air raid until the air raid stopped but usually they didn鈥檛 stop it, they told you the warning had gone and you were left to decide whether you wanted to take cover and go down into an air raid shelter or you wanted to go on dancing and after a while people used to go on dancing. There were overseas forces the Polish Navy and the Army there was the Czechoslovakian Army there were the Americans and the French and all the different nationalities that came over here to help us fight the war. So there were a lot of very nice people and a lot of lovely uniforms, all different types of uniforms and we used to enjoy ourselves and a lot of friendships were made from these dances, they were on a Wednesday and a Sunday because I was on duty most of the time it was only the Sunday that I was able to go to.
