In 1939 I had just moved to a junior school next to the railway station at Ashford, Kent.
After war had been declared many children were evacuated to Ashford from London and us local children had to make do with going to school in church halls and other such places. As the situation in Europe deteriorated all the London children were evacuated again though and we had our school back again. One school day during morning break we were all surprised to see train after train passing through. The trains were full of troops in different uniforms, some covered with blood and bandages.
It was only later that I discovered that the troops I had seen were returning from their evacuation from Dunkirk.
