Gasmasks were supplied in dull brown cardboard boxes and it was quite difficult to distinguish one from another, so we set about decorating or remaking our boxes.
Some were covered in Rexene, a sort of waterproof material, like imitation leather. Some had initials or names written on the box. Others were covered in precious scraps of material. As well as our gasmasks they were frequently used for carrying other essential items like lipstick and hankies. Before I departed for my new job in England, my mother had painted mine white. I thought it was quite fashionable, and, easy to find in the blackout!
A few weeks after my arrival in London, a girl came up to me and said "I recognise you - you came over on the boat and you were carrying a white gasmask".
