I'd have been twenty I think. I'd had four years apprentice as a carpenter. I was living in Cinque Ports Avenue in Hythe with my Mum, stepfather who was in the airforce and two brothers. I was working in New Romney putting rooves on shelters, camouflaging them.

One day, an air raid came on. I looked out and saw some bombers coming towards New Romney and I thought they were heading for us. I think they were after the gas there, but they turned. They bombed the light railway but there was shrapnel.

I was a bit relieved!
