This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Matthew Smaldon on behalf of Sheila Poleman and has been added to the site with his permission. Mrs Poleman fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I remember the day my school in Newbury was bombed. I was at home, as I was ill with tonsillitis. It was in the afternoon, after school had finished, and there were only a few children in after school classes. Quite a lot of these children and one teacher were killed. The bomb also hit the Alms Houses, and the church. They put up a replacement church, like a prefab, which was where my husband I got married.
