When I was at school at Dulwich it was the times of the V.I pilotless bombs. Our teachers were often people who had been brought in on a temporary basis, and I鈥檓 afraid we gave them a hard time!
One day we were in a room on the 3rd or 4th floor and the air raid warning went. When this happened a bell was rung in the building but on this occasion we kidded the new, temporary, teacher that it was just the fire bell being tested and we could stay up there. Of course, we boys wanted to see what, if anything, was going on. In no time we were rewarded by the sight of a VI bomb tearing along lower than our building and about 戮 mile away. We could see the top of it! We were excited and the teacher was terrified, especially when it banged into Sydenham hill, about a mile or two away!
The boy who had the desk behind me was Bob Monkhouse who became a famous comedian, and another in the form was Bob Goodwin, who became a scriptwriter for him years later.
