This story was submitted by Courtney Diane Davidson from Kilbowie Primary School Clydebank, on behalf of her Grandfather Thomas Davidson. She was given permission by her Great Aunt Catherine Davidson. The author fully understands the terms and conditions.
My story of the Clydebank Blitz is about my Granddad, Thomas.
One evening my great Granddad and his family were in a concert, being held in the Co-Operative Hall, having a great time when suddenly bombs started falling from the sky and landing all around them. Screaming and crying Thomas and his family came down the stairs onto the ground floor. All of the family huddeled together in the middle of the stairs, crying.
The door that you would use to enter the Co-Operative Hall was suddenly flung open by the blast of the bombs. With ladies screaming and evrybody worrying that a bomb would fly in and kill them all my great Granddad decided to do something about it. My great Granddad stood up and started walking down the stairs towards the door, his family loyally walked behing him, confidently and cautiously Thomas slammed the large doors closed.
When the bombs had died down the Davidsons started to walk to find their house, when they had got out of the Co-Operative Hall and had walked for about 15 minutes the bombs started up again. Kindly the owner of the Post Office - Mt Metclafe - called them into the Post Office. The davdsons stayed there until all of the bombs had stopped and they were safe to do out.
As the family kept on walking to their house they saw mant houses in flames. At the top of a huge hill they could see an enormous hole in the ground, they all ran down to see what this hole was. When the Davidsons got to the hole they all stared down it only to see darkness. The family avoided the hole and started to walk a bit faster.
When Thomas and his family got to their street they found out that their house had been bombed. The road behing them was horrendous, there were no houses, only rubble and flames. One of the houses had a direct hit, all of the family were in the house at the time and they were all killed. So the Davidsons found themselves lucky in a way.
On the way to Clydebank Thomas saw that the huge hole was blocked off, Thomas asked someone what it was and they replied by saying that it was an unexploded bomb. Thomas found him self lucky that the bomb hadn't exploded when his family were looking down it.
My great Granddad and his family moved after that and never had any problems worse than that.
Unluckily my great Granddad, Thomas, could not tell this story as he passed away in 1946 so I told it for him.
Rest in Peace great Granddad
