AN INCIDENT AT KINGSWOOD WARREN
The 大象传媒's Research Centre has operated from Kingswood Warren since 1947 and it was open to the public during Heritage Weekend last year. This is where I started work in 1944 before joining the Royal Navy in 1945. At that time, the property, which had been a hotel in the thirties, was owned by the Legal and General Assurance Society who required male staff to "spot" for flying bombs in half-hour duties. It was during one of my duty spells that a flying bomb "cut-out" as it approached the building. It destroyed a house in Bears Den 300-400 yards from where I stood, shattering the windows to the rear of our building. "Spotters" were expected to warn staff of impending danger by giving six consecutive rings on a push-button bell. But there was only time for 3! I remember the incident well - it happened on a clear June afternoon.
