On 1st September 1939, me, my Mum and two brothers were evacuated to Oxford. I was 11, my youngest brother was 4 my other brother was 12. My Father stayed in London during this time but eventually was bombed out and he then went to Sunderland, where we eventually joined him.
I remember the disruption and the trauma of being evacuated and the strain on my mum who had to look after the children by herself. It was also strange because we were Jewish and we stayed sometimes with Jewish families and sometimes with non-Jewish families. We met a lot of nice people and eventually we remained in the North of England, never returning to London.
