My twin brother and I attended St Saviours School in SE London. We were evacuated twice. The first was
to Burgess Hill near Brighton before the war started. For reasons I cannot recall we were taken back to London and war had started and the first blitz had commenced. After some months during which time a great deal of time was spent between
an Anderson and deep shelter adjacent to Lewisham hospital.I remember the terrible bombing, anti aircraft fire and the devastation of the area. This included the destruction of Lewisham open air market and the loss of life of the stallholders. You could see all of the Dockside area alight caused by either bombs or incendiaries. We were then evacuated, at the age of
eleven, for the second time to a beautiful village
named Little Ickford near Thame.I remember getting
off a bus in the evening and a collection of the villagers were assembled to select their choice of evacuees.A local Farmer and his wife and picked my brother and I.On arriving at their delightful thatched cottage close to the village pond. The village has remained as I remember, unchanged following a recent visit.
