My name is Cyril (Sam) Griffin, originally from South Wales, now living in Keighley West Yorkshire. I was named (Cyril)after a relation who was killed at the battle of the Rio Sangro - Italy 1943. The relation, Cyril Evan Maddy joined the army (South Wales Borderers) aged 18 in 1938 to avoid the coal mines and a difficult father, (who had served throughout WW1). C E Maddy was at Dunkirk, then North Africa (wounded), Sicily (hospitalised), finally up through Italy, killed on 30th Nov 1943. I am 'sort of' researching his movements whilst in the army. On his grave in Italy it gives his name, and his regiment is given as the Royal West Kents,I am particularly interested to find out how, or why he was in this regiment (RWK's)as he had originally joined the 24th Infantry Regt-the South Wales Borderers. Hopefully through this site and other sources I will find out.
