What we did for the 大象传媒 People's War Initiative
Suffolk County Council鈥檚 Libraries and Heritage Directorate (now part of ACCS) actively participated in the 大象传媒鈥檚 People鈥檚 War project during the period 2004 and 2005.
路 January 2004, Lowestoft Record Office ran pilot sessions to help users contribute their stories.
路 Following on from this, many Suffolk libraries enthusiastically signed up to the project and also offered dedicated IT sessions.
A number of events were arranged in 2004 to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day on 6 June 2004.
路 Libraries at Glemsford, Felixstowe and Woodbridge held reminiscence sessions and tea parties featured authentic food such as Spam fritters and eggless sponge, with swing dancing demonstrations and period costume.
路 At Beccles Library a Burma Star veteran gave an inspiring account of his wartime experience.
路 Home Library Service volunteers and their families shared their stories at Bury St Edmunds Library.
路 Other libraries, including Bungay, Hadleigh and Thurston, had displays and exhibitions and worked with Family Learning colleagues, local schools, veterans, cadet groups and Women鈥檚 Institutes.
In 2005 more events were organised to commemorate VE and VJ celebrations.

路 Bungay Library in collaboration with Bungay Museum was successful in getting lottery funding for the erection of an Air Raid Shelter in the library garden complete with a light and sound show.
