I was born and brought up in Ilford Essex' I was seventeen years old when war broke out in 1939. I had left school and was working for Ilford Ltd.the photographic manufacturers. Because our work was of national importance I was in a reserved occupation. However I joined the Home Guard and became a member of the anti-aircraft gun crew at Fairlop, Barkingside so although not in the front line i saw action spending many nights firing at the German aircraft flying into London. Ilford was subjected to enemy action on many occasions, we had incendiary bombs,land-mines,coventional bombs , flying bombs, and rockets. We also had hit and run bombers that flew in at low level dropped a bomb and then turned tail. Altogether the civilian population were in the front line as much as the troops.
