My father, William Alan Smith, served as a signalman - trained operator (a bunting tosser) from 1943 to the end of the war - demobbed '46. For years I have badgered him to get his memories of that time on paper. Finally, it is nearing completion and will shortly be posted on the Internet. He served on HMS Vesper (Atlantic convoy), HMS Stevenstone (blockade of Le Havre), ML303 (coastal forces and D-Day) and HMS Vetch (in the Med.)- as well as periods on signal stations on Gib and Malta. It has been an extraordinary experience writing up his memoirs, understanding the hardships as well as laughs, his fears and about life in the navy and at war.
