The four parts of this story were written by my Father, Denis Alfred Ernest Roby, prior to his death in September 2003, as a record for his family.
He was born in Newington Green, London in April 1921 as the second child to Albert & Ester Roby. His Father died in 1922 after a car accident caused shrapnel from a First World War injury to puncture his lung.
In general my Father had a good life but in the final few years he endured levels of pain and discomfort that would have made lesser men give up.
He entered Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield in October 2001 for vascual treatment to his legs. In May 2002, after contracting MRSA, he had both legs amputated above the knee in a single operation, he was 81. By the time he left hospital in July 2002 he weighed under six stone.
He recovered well in a local nursing home, becoming a favourite of the staff because of his determination to make the best of things.
My Mother joined him in as a resident of the nursing home in November 2002, but loosing her in January 2003, and the subsequent forced change of nursing home in July 2003, reduced his will to live.
He passed away in September 2003 after contracting a chest infection.
