My father was called up just previous to the war, in Manchester, and was sent for basic training to Bulford camp in Dorset. After that he served in France, left France on the Lancastria, survived its sinking and was sent to Northern Ireland to train some more, There he met and married my mother. He also served in North Africa, and then was part of the forces that went into Italy towards the end of the War. He was at Monte Cassino, not in the battle, but afterwards, and then went up towards and into Rome and Florence, of which he has always had fond memories.
I want to pass on some of his memories, as well as find some stories of times and places that he and my mother, who worked on munitions at Mackie's in Belfast, knew.
