A month before the war my father's job in London had to end because the Government requisitioned his shipping space from America for the speciality restaurant machines which he sold on behalf of the National Cash Register Co. at whose headquarters he was a star salesesman.
Offered any managership in Britain he chose South Wales because he thought it would be safer for his young family and he had a close friend who had married a girl from the Welsh valleys.
So a week or so before the war we drove up the Western Avenue in London via Oxford to the Welsh valleys where my mother, little brother and I had lodgings in Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale and Tredegar.
