As a child, the war didn't seem a great hardship - although it was obvious that mum sometimes had a job fixing us up with a nourishing meal. Being in a small Leicestershire market town we were hardly at the centre of hostilities, and although we had the occasional bomb we were favoured with being able to enjoy the pleasures of childhood. Reality hit home hard, however, when I experienced the aftermath of war and was called for my National Service. I have written of that quickly "growing-up" time!
