I was just under four when war broke out and I started school in January 1941 in the middle of a very hard winter. Much of my early schooling was spent in the shelters at school - during the daylight bombing - but from early 1942 onwards, schooling and life was fairly uneventful until the short doodlebug raids in the summer and early autumn of 1944. For a short period we agin went into the shelters, though only for limited times.
My memories of the war are clear from the time of El Alamein onwards and I do remember some earlier episodes.
