I joined the army, Grenadier Guards, Army Number 2619993 in June 1940 and transferred to 11SAS, which later became 1st Parachute Battalion,in December 1940. and served with them in four caqmpaigns, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Arnhem, Holland. After repatriation from Stalag 11B,having been resident in Newmarket Hospital for 18 months undergoing surgery on my hand I was discharged from the army in 1946. Returning to Arnhem in 1954 for the 10th reunion of Arnhem veterans I met my wife Josephine, of Dutch descent, who had been interned, together with her family, by the Japanese in Java, where she was born. We resided in Coventry, England until 1965, then emigrated to Australia to join the bulk of her family.
