I am interested in the war because at the time I was too young to have more than an impression of what was going on and I was lucky enough to have very little contact with the tragic events that many others must have experienced. Now I am a grandmother I can imagine how difficult it must have been to be a parent then. Actually, since my mother was 6 years old when WWI began and I was 6 years old when WWII began, when my own daughter was 6 I could not stop wondering then whether history was going to repeat itself. This was very unsettling for me in 1964. I was also very worried, when I was planning to get married, that I would not know how to shop for food etc. since most of my life up till then had been governed by rationing. One simply bought what was allowed. It did in fact finish just before 1955 and I managed OK but I still have an ingrained instinct to 'make do and mend', save anything that could still have a use to someone and generally deplore today's attitude of not waiting to save up for the larger purchases. Of course the present day emphasis on recycling is already second nature to me.
