I have always been keen on history and the momentous history which occurred only a very few years before I was born has a particular interest for me as my father, who died in 1980, served in the RASC and was one of the thousands rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk in June 1940. My mother, now 93 also has vivid memories of the Liverpool blitz and spending nights in cold damp smelly air raid shelters, or alternatively sitting for hours under the stairs waiting for the "All Clear". I remember in my early childhood many members of our family talking about "the War" and remembering their experiences - the shortages, the rationing etc. and trying to make do, but also the good times - Glenn Miller's music the radio programmes of the day and the funny incidents which despite the awful times did quite frequently occur.

So I feel that my life, although I wasn't born until 1946 is somehow inextricably linked with the War and has gone someway to making me the person I am
