My father was a Londoner born and bred, from a family with at least 200 years of links with the river Thames at Greenwich. Despite a family who were lightermen and an apprentice lighterman himself in 1939 he volunteered for the army and the BEF, not the navy, unlike his dad who was on the supply barges during the first war and his brother who served on the MTB's .
I am proud of my Father and of his service during the war and want to make his contribition known. He died some 12 years ago and was reticent about his wartime exploits, only rarely telling me about them, but what I know is of interest to me and I hope others find it so.
I would also like to hear from any members of his old regiment, The Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry.
