I was born in North Lambeth in May 1936 and lived with my mother and father in Burdett Buildings in Westminster Bridge Road.
My father (William James Banister) volunteered for the Royal Artillery (H.A.A.) in the hope of staying in London but after first serving in Norway spent the rest of the war in the Lybian Desert.
My mother and I were left alone (except for my father's parents who lived in the same buildings) until his return in 1945 by which time we had moved to Kennington
