I volunteered for the Army on 5-11-1942. On 5-2-1943 I was sent to the Green Howards training camp in Beverley,Yorks.I was then sent on to Farnborough,Hamps.54th Tank traing camp.After 9 months I had completed training as Driver,Gunner and wireless operator {No.19 set}then I was posted to 1st RTR,7th Armoured Division,{Desert Rats}, stationed at Sugar HillCamp,Didlington,Norfolk.My C.O. was
Lt-Colonel Mick Carver.The Regiment had just returned from Italy to refit.I was in Recce Troop..We had 7 "Honeys", Stuart light tanks with crews of four=28 men,7 Humber and 7 Daimler scout cars "Dingos" with crews of two men = 28 more, a total of 56 officers and men,of whom less than a dozen made it to Hamburg and the German surrender.I have a photo which was taken at the time.The tanks had paintings of the seven dwarfs on them,mine was Bashful.I was with the battalion until 1947.
