In the first drama DUNKIRK, we could see the massacre of british prisonners of war by SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, most of the second battalion Royal Warwickshire but also from the 4th Cheshire and Royal Artillery.
The history of the battle for Wormhout, 28 may 1940, took place on 3 french towns :
1 and 2)Wormhout and Esquelbecq protected by the Warwicks with sections of Cheshire and Royal Artillery
3) Ledringhem protected by the 5th Gloucesters
At the end of the day, the british soldiers protecting Wormhout and Esquelbecq surrendered and were brought by the SS in a barn (a cowshed) at Esquelbecq and massacred.
The remembrance place was safed in 2000 by a franco-british association and will be inaugurated on 29 may 2004.
There are 3 survivors of this massacre alive : Bert EVANS living near Birmingham, Brian FAHEY living in Scotland and Charles DALEY living in London.
I write a book called "the forgotten massacre" published in 2000 to raise funds for the purchase and embellishement of the memorial site.
You can found the book at the Royal Regiment of FUSILIERS, Warwick Museum.
