One lovely Summer'sday in August 1942 I was on the Piccadilly line on my way to work in Clerkenwell. I helped to run a factory making
Asdic gears for submarines.
We were all turned off the train as there was an air-raid.I climbed the spiral stairs to the surface to find the square deserted and silent.I was suddenly aware that the leaves were rustling and the birds singing.
The ARP wardens had done a good job as all was closed and I could see no sign of a shelter! The silence became uncanny and I huddled in the recess of a doorway.Suddenly I heard the ominous sound of plane engines ,I looked up and high in the sky saw a flight of Nazi bombers. The noise became deafening as they passed on their way to kill and maim.
Again , heard the sound of leaves and bird-song,and when the All-clear sounded I hurried down to the Underground to continue my journey.
I wondered how many years it had been since a
London Square was silent except for nature's sounds! A shudder went through me as I realised that had those bombers dropped thier cargo on that Square no one would ever have known what had happened to me!
