About us
We are a friendly public library in the London Borough of Southwark. We have a Learning Centre offering free beginners' computer classes and internet taster sessions to local people. Members of the public can also book to use one of our computers for up to one hour a day free of charge.
Come and post your story at Blue Anchor Library
We are hoping that people will come to our library to post their stories on to the WW2 People's War website using our computers. We will be able to offer support to people who are unfamiliar with computers.
Our first WW2 People's War event
On Tuesday 2nd March, our regular Pensioners' Club members got into the mood to recall some personal and family stories. Unusually, as they came in, the sound of the Andrews Sisters filled the library. Instead of the slide projector, the Learning Centre's digital projector was on loan, manned by Jafer Sharif, to show the WW2 People's War website and the WW2 'movies' from the history section of the 大象传媒 website. The Educational Library service lent an amazing suitcase full of wartime objects including a ration book, a Morse code buzzer and Newspapers and magazines of the time. Julian Heather and Pat Holland read some extracts from stories from the website. Some of these had a local connection like the 'Wedding on a Shoestring: In Camberwell' by mrsknight. Memories started flowing from the group and we hope to capture some of them soon.
March Report
During March, George M has uploaded his memories of a Jamaican childhood onto the website, George B has concentrated on research and Beryl P has set up her own personal page on the People's War website. Her 'A Cabin Boy's letters' is a tribute to her brother whose ship was torpedoed and I was very touched by reading it. She is listed as a 'friend' below and you can click on the link to read her stories. We are very fortunate as Beryl has been lending her computer skills and working with Fred N on getting his story uploaded.
April/May Report
Fred N's story is now on the website. His adventures in Southwark and Gibraltar make a great read. Janet F has started work on her memories from her childhood in Glasgow, and once she's ready to upload, we're going to try scanning in a photograph for the first time.
June/July Report
For the first time we successfully uploaded a photograph on the site. Janet F's story transports you back in time to her childhood in Glasgow and she has a great sense of humour. It's great to also be able to see a photo of the characters in the story!
