I joined the raf in aug 1942 and after electrician school in Melksham I was posted to Kinloss in Scotland, and then th the Shetland Islands for sheer boredom. After several stations I joined the 151 Repair Unit and was posted to Wevelgem Belgium for 14 months. The work was varied and interesting. We were responsible to maintain many different aircraft for immediate use. The one craft that gave us the most trouble was the Hurricane, a good plane but hatd to start, using shot gun shells, one had to stand by with a fire extinguisher. Lif was very good there We weruntil the German break through in the Ardennes. We were placed on high alert for many weeks. In order to advance my position I was transferred back to England for further schooling which elevated me to group one, which meant a few more shillings. After a couple more stations I was demobbed in May 1947. Not a very exciting career but a very safe one!!! My most dissapointing experience was being rejected for Pilot school because of color blindness mainly. But that is fate. I often wonder if any of my former comrades are alive and well and have a computer to avail themselves of this marvelous opportunity to chat about the days long ago when we were so young.
