I am contributing these in memory of my father LAC Francis William Charles Willmot 1005319 who passed away last year (2002). He spent from June 1940 until the end of hostilities in the RAF , spending a large proportion of the time on attachment with the RCAF as ground control crew for 39 Recce Wing , which was part of 2TAF. 39 Recce wing was a photo reconnaisance unit in support of the British Army. He landed at Arromanches on D Day +2 and then followed up the fighting with his unit through the remainder of Western Europe, eventually ending up at Luneburg Heath when the peace treaty was signed. from there he went to the Isle of Sylt in the Freisian Islands and operated the control tower until his demob came up.
Like many who had seen and done horrendous things during the war, Dad was reluctant to talk about his experiences. However after a trip to the Normandy beaches in 1999 he put pen to paper, and these contributions are my attempts and translating his writings.
Our family contact with the RAF still perseveres as we live next to RAF St Athan, where my wife works as a MOD administration assistant
