The museum is interested in researching the unique wartime experience of the Newry and Mourne area. The area covered by the collection policy of the museum includes South Down, South Armagh and Newry City.
Some of the stories posted on the website are from interviews that have taken place with local people.
Further Research will focus on the experiences of local people who lived in the area during the Second World War, those who settled here such as soldiers and evacuees and local people who were on active service during the war.
Research will also explore the impact of the war on the local economy and employment e.g. those who left the area to work in the munitions factories or who travelled across the Border to assist the war effort. Agriculture is another area to be considered; what effect did the Border have on the local markets. Did people in the Newry area have better access to agricultural produce and? Were local farmers in a more competitive market than in the rest of Northern Ireland? Was pre-war cross-border migration affected by the War and did this impact on jobs south of the Border?
The unique Border situation facilitated smuggling, and one of the focuses will be an examination of how rigid the Border controls were before and during the war. Various regiments were stationed in the area. Research will seek to discover how soldiers; leave and training was affected by the Border; what were the implications for those who ventured- deliberately or unintentionally; across the Border? For example, what was the situation regarding aerospace over Carlingford Lough and landings at the aerodrome at Greencastle/Cranfield.?
