My father was a Royal Engineer. His name was John L.Farrar. I'm not sure which field company he was with. He was posted to North Africa sometime around June 1941 and served with a motor vehicle repair platoon throughout the North AFrica campaign and then went to Scicily and Italy with the 8th Army.
He was 21 years old on the 6th June 1944, D-day. At the time he had no idea of what was going on in Normandy, he was having a good time celebrating his birthday with his mates and some infantrymen who were posted nearby in Italy. Soon after this part of the Italy campaign my father was sent to England for a WOSB and then trained in North Scotland (Scap Flow?) and was commisioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and posted to Indai where he served out the rest of the war.
He was demobbed as part of the forgotten army in 1947.
He did not like being referred to as a D-day dodger and was angry that the lost his job because he was so late in being demobbed.
If anyone rememebrs Dad and can tell me anything about the companies he served with I would be grateful to hear.
