My name is John Nolan, I am 26 and live in Kent. My Grandfather flew Mosquitos with 142 Squadron during the war and I grew up listening to his stories of war flying. He passed away in 1997 and I decided to learn to fly in order to follow in his footsteps. I am a Private Pilot and I fly DH Tiger Moths at the Tiger Club in Kent. I feel very lucky to have the chance to fly these vintage aircraft which are very similar to the training types my that Grandfather learned to fly in almost 60 years ago.
Last year I took part in a Channel 4 series called 'Bomber Crew', during which I completed some elements of Flying, Navigating and Bomb Aiming training. I found the experience very interesting and a useful insight into how difficult, stressful and tiring operational flying during the Second World War must have been. During the course of the programme I had the opportunity to fly the Harvard trainer, as my Grandfather had done and also the B17 Flying Fortress which was a real privilege.
