I was only 15 when war broke out, so joined the local volunteer defence] later the [home guard]Then i joined up in Feb 1941 after putting my age up two years so i signed up for 12 years, 7 with the colours and 5 on B reserve. I joined the Royal Artillery as a guuner and did my training at Larkhill then joined the 56th in Mar 41 at Ashford KENT as a gun layer on 2 pounder anti/tank guns,after about a month or two we took over the new 6 pounder and i was made up to bombardier. The div moved over to Essex and we left UK in about July 42 on the Francona to S/Africa via Freetown and then on to Africa. And then up through Transjorden and Persia to Iraq and finnished up in Kukut.We stayed here for about 3 months and then drove through back the way we came to join the 8 th army in Tunis and fought with them untill the war finnished in the middle east.We returned to Tunis and started training for the invasion of Italy and landed at Salerno on 9th Sept 43 as part of the 5th American army I was made up to sergent i was only 19, We stayed with them and fought in Anzio as well .In the midle of 44 we went over to the 8th army side and fought with them until the end of the war in May 45 I returned home in 1946 after serving 4 years overseas and finnished my time at Woolwich and was demobbed in sept 48 after about 7and half years.
