I was 8 years old when the war started and I lived with my parents in Friendly St in Deptford SE London.I went to Lucas Hill primary school and then after passing the 11 plus exam I went to Colfes Grammar School.Friendly St has been rebuilt over the years but the house I lived in is one of three or four (nos 80-84 I think) that are now listed buildings and are preserved,I guess ,as an example of how lower class people lived. We certainly could not call ourselves middle class.
I remember the names of some of the boys I used to play with, there was Gordon Miller down the road, the Nicholas twins lived almost opposite but past the crossroads with Cranbrook Rd.The Cooper bros. (bullies}lived in Seymour St.There was a shop on the corner which I think was called Robinsons and on the opposite corner was The Cranbrook public house. This area was heavily bombed in the war and I have a number of memories which I think are worth recording as measure of how we lived in those days.
