I was 13 in 1939 and lived through WW2 wartime days, experiencing the Clydeside Blitz, evacuation, membership of the Air Training Corps. In 1944, aged 17, I volunteered for RAF Aircrew but failed a final eyesight test. At 18, I joined the Army for Infantry training. En route to N.W.Europe in Jan. 1945 my transport, HMLST415, was torpedoed in the North Sea. Later, I was drafted to 5/7th.Gordon Highlander at Gennep (Holland) and served in subsequent actions through Germany - Goch, The Rhine, Isselberg, Emsburin, Wildehausen, Delmenhorst and Ebersdorf, entering Bremerhaven on 8th, May, 1945 - one day before my 19th, Birthday.
I have submitted "THE RHINE REVISITED,which includes a memorial to the dead Naval crew of HMST415;also,"WW2:MY TEENAGE YEARS,1939 to 1945" covering my wartime experiences as a schoolboy and soldier, and post-war military service in Tripoli (Libya), U.K. and Hong Kong.
I would be interested in contact with others who shared any of the above experiences.
