They did try hard. There was one night when Carshalton (and other places) was bombarded with incendiaries. One burned through the house next door and burnt out a couple of feet from my head.
Then on one afternoon, without an air raid warning, a doodlebug went whizzing past about 50 yards away and about 50 feet up. I had a clear view of it, something I will never forget.
But early on in the war, a Stuka dive bomber appeared to be coming straight for our house. It's bomb flew over the top and landed opposite my school. The explosion threw me across the room.
