As I "grew up" in the war years I was well and truly initiated into the art of "make do and mend" and feel this put me in a good position to deal with the rest of my life. I hear people say they remember being hungry - I never recall feeling real hunger, so perhaps I was lucky in my choice of Mother! We did not have much in the way of sweets but used to buy carrots on the way to school and nibble those. We also used to make toffee of a kind by melting sugar in a spoon over a fire lit on a nearby bomb site. We used to make rag rugs out of old clothing - also rag dolls and their clothing and, dare I say it golliwogs - which were always a favourite.
