I started researching my father's war record just before he died. He had never claimed his medals, after asking him he expressed a wish to have them.
They were ordered but unfortunately because of the waiting list, he died about a month before we received them.
I also requested my father's war record, which has been a mine of information.
We visited the sites of several battles which involved the Leicesters. The main site was a village on the Gothic Line, called Mondaino. This was the site of one of the fiercest battles the Leicesters were involved in during the Italian Campaign. By chance we met a local who is an expert on the Gothic Line. He gave us lots of information and introduced us to his father, who was a partisan and is now a sprightly 93 year old. The family made us most welcome, told us lots of anecdotes and even showed us videos of the battles. A programme was made by Italian TV and they used actual film from the battles themselves. The videos were incredible, and we were presented with copies. The Leicesters were on the films.
