At the outbreak of war in Sept.1939 I was 18 years old,as I had in the previous April in a mad fit of patriotism joined the Territorial Army I was mobilised on Sept 1st 1939.I joined the 2/8th Battn The Middlesex Regt, and served with this battalion for the whole duration of the war until my eventual demob in June 1946.Although this battalion was promoted to the title 1st Battn. due to the capture of the existing regular battalion in Hong Kong in 1942,and the 2/8th became the 1st Middlesex.
We were a .303 Vickers Machine Gun support battalion, and later reformed to three companies of machine guns and one company of 4.2 Mortars, thus we entered the Normandy campaign in this format supporting the Infantry battalions of the 15th Scottish Division.
I am now 82 years of age, unfortunately now a widower living in Essex,I am a member of the local branch of the Normandy Veterans Association ,and I am hoping to make the trip to Normandy again in 2004 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D Day.
