This page contains the wartime memories of people living in the Medway area of North Kent. Some of them were however then living in London and other areas of the country or serving overseas and this is a record of their experiences.

During 2004 and 2005 Medway Libraries collected written memories of local people in all our libraries. We also held special People’s War reminiscence events at Wigmore, Chatham and Gillingham Libraries, and at Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre and also visited some of our housebound readers who volunteered to have their memories recorded. Together with volunteers, these were transcribed and added to this web page, which will form a permanent archive of the memories of Medway residents.

Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre has many other resources that document the area during the war including photographs, local newspapers, school log books and civil defence information.

Please email local.studies@medway.gov.uk for further information or see our web site http://www.medway.gov.uk
