I was born in 1937. In November 1939 my father was killed in action whilst serving on the armed Merchant cruiser HMS Rawalpindi. I was two years old and never knew my father. Some years ago I read Ludovic Kennedy's book"On my way to the club" which describes the loss of his father's ship-Captain Kennedy was a well respected skipper.Ludovic wrote me a nice letter in reply to mine ! I wonder if there are other folks alive whose relations served on this ship. Many on board were naval reservists-over 30year olds!
My mother and I were evacuated to Marple,Cheshire, and came to grandparents in Manchester at times during the war-I well remember the Blitz and being taken to a school building at night when Trafford Park was bombed. I saw most of central Manchester after the bombing and the burnt out shells of the central buildings.
