I was born in Coleraine Victoria Australia on November 28 1941. I remember the soldiers on the trains in their uniforms. Just before Christmas 1945 I was travelling by train from Melbourne to Warnambool with my parents. We were going to visit my fathers'parents for Christmas. The train passed the Laverton RAAF airforce base on the western outskirts of Melbourne. On both sides of the train line were hundreds of parked fighter planes that had arrived back from the war in the Pacific. People were using axes and saws to cut them up for scrap metal. The soldiers who were returning from New Guinea and Burma and were very friendly to young children.
