I was evacuated from London 1939 at 3yrs . I returned to my family 1947. My first billet was Spreyton Devon and then lived on Dartmoor Meldon. At 5 yrs I moved to the market town nearby called Okehampton. I went to the primary school and returned to London when I was 11years. I had 2 brothers billeted in the same town , but, I do not remember any interaction with them. When I did return to my family I found I had 5 older siblings. A sister and 4 brothers. Nothing was discussed about adjusting. One was expected to get on with it.Thankfully I had parents who thought that further education was for the girls as well as the boys. I went to London University at 14 years and have been in my chosen career for 55 years now.
I am interested in other peoples experience of 'getting on withit' and how the seperation from their family has affected their lives and relationships. I feel that the government of that time did very little if anything to help or compensate the Evacuees. More later
