I was a militia man in 1939 and would have been called up before the war had I not been taking a Civil Service exam. The outbreak of war cancelled the exam and thus I awaited callup. I was not looking forward to this as when I had my interview to be a militia man I was told that as I was a GPO telephone engineer I had to go in the Marines. Why, Goodness knows! I did not fancy a watery grave so when I saw an advert for radio enthusiasts to join the Royal Artillery I could not get in soon enough. Nearly seven years later I was demobbed, to join up again when Stalin started to rattle his sabre. Thus I served about 15 years in all, simply from answering an advert in a daily paper.
