My name is John Sneddon/Born October 1939 in Coatbridge /Lanarkshire/Scotland. My stories have little snippets of information that may jog other peoples memories about things and times they lived through, either happy or sad periods in thier childhood that may want them to add something to this site for future generations to read.
1/Massive Grates these were heating and cooking facilities all in one ,usually in a Single End ,I.E.Room and Kitchen.
2/Do you remember the day sweets came off rationing and were stocked in the shops ,it was like dying and going to Heaven.
3/Making your own Christmas decorations from strips of coloured paper ,readymade ones were too dear to buy.
4/Washing day for your Mother was a full and backbreaking day, outside Wash-houses ,boilers that had to be lit early to reach the temperatures capable of boiling the weeks washing ,this could be anything from 4 to 5 seperate washes ,then sinks filled with cold water to cool down the washing before putting through the Mangle ,a larger version of a Wringer, then the task of hanging everything out on the rope to dry, most items were heavy materials,so again it was a struggle to hang some things over the rope, and then the Ironing was still to come, our Iron was a solid metal one placed on the Grate to warm up it was heavy and could not be temperature controlled,.
5/Carpet beating ,the carpets hung over the rope and beaten with a switch to remove the dirt.
5a/Do you remember the bread, they came in two loaves ,unsliced delicious taste,,you got sent to get a 1/2 loaf which was really a full loaf ?
5c/How many shop names can you remember ,most if not all have dissappeared,Liptons,Templetons COME ON HELP ME to name a few more.
5b/The pulley that you hung the clothes up on to dry inside when it was raining .
6/The main Cinema chains ,the Odeon and the Regal, had Childrens clubs, most children joined both, as you got something on your Birthday, and something at Christmas time, also you were out of your Mothers hair for up to 4 hours at each club, so she had time to herself,a luxury for most Mothers.
7/We had a large Tin Bath, and had to boil pans ,kettles etc,on the fire range to get a hot bath we kids would find that all of us got our bath with the same water ,or it took too long to boil the necessary amount of new hot water.
